sleepy hollow
hardly anyone talks about
heaven anymore

not yet ready
to call it a day, my niece
pockets some sunshine
____________

winter wind riding the red fox home
____________

dad's death day
birds he imitated
one week early
____________

after heartache
the comfort of
swirling fog
____________

Robert Epstein is a licensed psychologist who lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has edited several anthologies: The Breath of Surrender: A Collection of Recovery-Oriented Haiku; Dreams Wander On: Contemporary Poems of Death Awareness; and The Temple Bell Stops: Contemporary Poems of Grief, Loss and Change; as well as two books of haiku: Checkout Time is Noon: Death Awareness Haiku; and A Walk Around Spring Lake: Haiku.  He is currently editing another anthology, The Sacred in Contemporary Haiku, due to be released in 2014.

    "Winter wind riding the red fox home" is a line to be remembered. Dad's death day and the bird song bring fond and not so fond memories to me. Thank you. These four seem consecutive rather than separate. Love them one and all.

  7. Each of your "gems" paint clear, heart touching pictures for the reader, Robert! All but the first are delightful to envision! I smile as I read the 4th for I believe the birds came to pay a tribute to Dad; the 5th I can so relate to; and as to the first one..this reality saddens me.I enjoyed these very much!
