Old Soldier
A leaf...a soldier
Survived the winter
Tenaciously hanging
Onto bare branches
The heavy snows
And howling winds
Could not budge them;
They remained resilient
Now spring is here
And the old yields
To the green buds
& pushy young men
The soldier and leaf
Both stand with pride
As life cycles continue
They boldly step aside

Chris,
ReplyDeleteA great poem. Welcome to Whispers if you are new, a warm welcome from me even if you are not.
Your new friend,
David Fox
Thank you so much. I appreciate your warm welcome.
DeleteDear Chris,
ReplyDeleteYour poem reminds me of a similar poem by Wallace Stevens, "The Death of a Soldier." In Stevens' poem the season is autumn whereas yours is spring, however the idea of comparing "leaf and soldier" and seasonal cycles is quite striking between the two.
Very nice poem,
Thank you,
Michael
Thank you Michael. I was not familiar with that poem. I had to look it up.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your poem Chris, thank you for sharing it with us.
