Dandelions for Mommy--By Joe Flach--United States

Dandelions for Mommy

Most think of this as a weed and don’t consider it a flower,
But I watched my young son gather dandelions for an hour.
“They are so pretty and yellow, I am picking them just for her.
Mommy will love them so much because they’re her favorite color.”

He squats and he picks each one near the bottom of the stem,
Then stares and examines it; they each look different to him.
He sniffs in wonderment, carrying each gift over to hand to me,
And adds it to the pile of glory he will present to his Mommy.

The dandelions are everywhere, scattered throughout the park;
He could continue to pick each one until the skies all grow dark.
Most people would say the grounds were terribly cared for,
But to my son, a more fantastic garden he’d never seen before.

The time came for us to go, though he didn’t want to stop;
We gathered up his beautiful flowers, over twenty in the lot.
So happy and yet so sad he walked up to his Mommy proud and brave,
And laid down his gift of love; his bouquet upon her grave.

  1. Joe, it is so true that beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. The joy is forever and always in the giving and in the receiving and the pure innocence and wonderment of the innocence placed upon the grave and your poem shows us that humility and pure love come and are given without parameters........ beautiful poem. 2. Such a touching poem, Joe. As a mom of 6, I've received many dandelion bouquets over the years, and have loved each one. They are the color of the sunshine that bursts from that little, giving heart. Thanks for sharing your beautiful words with the world! Lisa

  5. Dear Joe,
    I am so glad you posted this touching poem. As a child, I would gather wildflowers for my mother and she always received them joyfully. Thinking of this little boy placing the flowers on his mother's grave brought tears to my eyes. You are such an amazing writer and I'm delighted to have an opportunity to read your words again. Until the last verse, I was smiling as the boy collected the dandelions. Then the final line packs quite a punch. Simply wonderful! Love to you and your family, Carolyn D.

  9. The gift of love is priceless, your poem touched my heart for many reasons. Dandelions have medicinal properties, they do look pretty growing on our lawns.
    I have them growing in the front and back. I remember picking them as a child. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift of poetry. Blessings always, what beautiful memories to hold dear in your heart. Leokadia

  10. Ah the dandelion has a love/hate relationship with most homeowners. We cannot resist watching a young child blowing the white petals to the wind and we cannot help but complain about their prolific abundance in early Spring. You poem touches the readers heart and the imagery is superior. Thanks for sharing. Robert

  15. Hi Joe. Welcome to Whispers. I enjoyed your poem, "Dandelions For Mommy." They may not be the 'prettiest' flower in the family, but when they are done with such warmth and meaning as someone giving it from his or her heart, Dandelions become as beautiful as the rest. Thanks for sharing this. It really touched my heart and senses. Continued blessings!
