Distant Yesterdays--By Richard Sponaugle--United States

Distant Yesterdays

Once sparkling blue eyes
reflect as murky olive.
Retinal and mental deterioration
squeeze them inward…
Picture postcard memories
of crisp, mountain air,
chirping robins and honey perfume,
padlocked lips that smooch,
and two hearts with boundless dreams…
Windows to the soul
shut tighter than coffins,
as early morning Spring
fades to Winter at midnight.

Richard Sponaugle was born 4-20-60 in Maryland and raised in Northern Virginia.  He received a BA from George Mason University.  A prolific poet and songwriter, he has been published in many venues.

  1. Dear Richard,
As we age, our eyes lose the clarity they once had, but the "picture perfect memories" are always there for us to enjoy. You have a unique, artistic style that makes the reader think about things far beyond the words on the page. Thank you for sharing this with us.
    Best wishes,
    Carolyn

  2. Thank you, Robert Dufresne, for the following comment--

This is a powerful poem with much depth.
Goes for the heart and with a touch of envy
    for those involved actually.
    Different and I like it.

  3. Ah, but the memories always stay so fresh and young. Some people don't have such ability to conjure up a memory, good or bad, and so those you can should consider this a blessed and special ability. And, that you are able to share with us hungry to read folk, therein lies another blessing for all.......... Sheri / www.poetryandbeyond.net
