Poet of the Month--Michael Todd

Round and Round

By Michael Todd

Round and round and round it goes.
See the motion of the falling snow.
Floats in the sphere, no place to go,
How fascinating, this snow globe.

A picture in her mind appears,
A postcard from her dad, from the lines.
Some days blurry, some days clear,
A memory frozen somewhere in her mind.

Her life in this retirement home,
She spends her time in wait.
Even in a crowd, she's alone,
Not aware of either's fate.

It was the war to end all wars.
Omaha Beach, where he arrived,
Campaign in Europe for his tour.
He never left that beach alive.

His effects sent home to the states,
He stayed behind, was buried there.
Early on, strange twist of fate;
He found that postcard lying near.

From the body of an enemy, slain,
He picked it up, this souvenir,
Bartholdi's legacy, intact, plain.
"If I make it out, I'll take the tour."

A snow globe has a porcelain base.
Filled with water, structure inside,
Turn and shake, snow flakes chase.
Left still, this image will subside.

In a chair, her final sleep, sound;
Behind a glass of water, filled to brim,
The postcard was her final vision,
Save for the one she had of him.

Thoughts on “Round and Round ”--From the initial stanza on, Michael builds us picture of loss, loneliness, and survival.  This powerful poem takes the reader on a journey, one that allows the reader to travel along.  The sadness of the last stage of life left me wishing someone was around to love her.  This is an impressive piece, one that shows the level of Michael’s talent.

Congratulations and thank you Michael!  I appreciate all you do and have done for Whispers.

Sincerely,

Karen O’Leary, Editor

  1. This poem came about, as a result of someone suggesting I write a poem about a snow globe, with the Eiffel Tower inside.
Writing the poem was a step in a journey that led me to this place, Whispers in the Wind. I would not suggest my journey culminates here, but for just a short while, I think I will pause, and admire the view. It just does not get any better than this, for me. Thanks to the staff at Whispers, and the regular contributors, and also to the casual readers who pass by. There is something special at Whispers for everyone who will just take some time to peruse...

  4. Michael,

I enjoyed reading your work..Its depth of emotion was alluring to the reader..I could so relate to the aloneness displayed through the elderly lady..It was well written with good rhyme, rhythm, and flow..

    1. Sara... When it became time to write this, I had never been in a comparable situation, or even heard tell of such a predicament. I could only surmise as to what it might be like for someone... Looking back, I can't say what took me down this road. Sometimes when we write, things just come to us, and in a hurry... Thank you for visiting.

    1. David... Since writing this poem, I have spent many days and nights in a nursing home, with a parent. Fortunately, things got better and we got to go home, and everyone is doing reasonably well. But, for the time I was there, I learned to appreciate things I had before, taken for granted.

I appreciate your kind remarks, Sir.

    1. Peter... For all the years I have been involved in social media, doing some reading and writing along the way, the best times I have had have always been in the context and contents of the commentary section. That is where friends and acquaintances are made, and the real life stories are told.

Thanks for coming by to visit.

  11. Hi Michael....Congratulations on being selected Poet of the Month. My late mother spent 2 1/2 years in a nursing facility & I spent many hours visiting & volunteering there as well. End of story, having been a widow at the time, I met my new husband, a widower there, whose mother was also a resident! God had wonderful plans that were completely unexpected! We're married a little over 4 years now! Thanks for sharing your heartfelt poem! ~Chris

  13. Thank you, Isha Wagner, for the following--

This is my interpretation. Others will differ. A woman clinging to a memory of her father killed at Omaha portrays the futility and horror of war : the yearning to keep the remembrance alive : it seems it was all she had to cling to : the tragic reality of death (we all must face) expressed so well in these lines of Michael Todd. A fine poet indeed.

    Yours sincerely
    Isha Wagner.

  14. To Isha... The conflict between good and evil often leads to conflict, where one entity is willing to kill and the other is willing to die. Sadly, this is the way of the world. Combatants are like hamsters in a wheel. They run faster and faster toward a destination they cannot envision. Eventually, those that survive, stop. From there, they simply step off the wheel and walk away a survivor. I wish things were different.
