The Chimney--By Colan Hiatt--United States

The Chimney

Amid a cluster of the trees
I saw it standing there erect
An old chimney from yesteryear
Little deterioration could I detect

It’s hard to believe that years ago
A home graced this very site
Timbers that were firm and strong -
Decay and ruin, are now their plight

The handiwork of bygone days
That once seemed to be intact
Are mixed within the rubble now
A product of, time's impact

How true in life, can we relate
To fading of, things not secure
All that's not built upon the Rock
In time will fail - to endure

So it seems I should ever be aware
Of the rock "chimney" when I pray
Lord grant that I would ever choose
Things that will abide, and not decay

Colan Hiatt resides in Mt. Airy, NC. with his wife. A retired electronic technician, he has been writing for several years. Most all the poetry, is derived from observing "down-to-earth" events that occur around us. A personal "mini-story" is often associated with the majority of compositions. Usually a metaphor is found with spiritual implications that portray God as the ultimate solution to life's problems. To direct the reader to this "Source", is the desired goal.

  1. Oh, Colan, I love your poem and using the chimney is the greatest metaphor! How you've placed the imagery to specify depth is beautifully thought out and expressed! It all embraces a very strong and spiritual meaning which is exquisite! Material things are only that, yet, what embrace or have embraced it before it became nothing gives your words beautiful life! I am so pleased to read you here on Whispers! I hope and will look forward to more! Sheri / www.poetryandbeyond.net

  4. Dear Colan,

Welcome to Whisper's and I hope you enjoy visiting here. I enjoyed your poem on the chimney; what a wonderful metaphor to use to describe the things that leave our lives and the things that are always there to stay. A wonderful poem to think upon and thank you for sharing it with us.

  5. Hi Colan, enjoyed this first poem of yours on Whispers. It is wise to build our life on solid ground; frivolities are like sand that gives way at the first signs of insecurity. // paul

  6. I enjoyed reading your 'down to earth' poetry. Great visual leaving one something to ponder...

  7. Oh,, how I love this poem, Colan. The metaphor for our lives compared to the enduring chimney is remarkable and brought tears to my eyes.

In a nearby forest, there is such a chimney with no signs of the house that once surrounded it. It is a tribute to time's changes and the remains of a family we will never truly know.

    Best wishes,

  8. Hi Colan, I enjoyed your poem & strong message. I know that "Upon the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand." Wonderful inspiration! Thanks for sharing...~Chris
