This Way to the Egress--By Eleanor Michael--United States

This Way to the Egress

My generation is leaving
one at a time, more lately.
Yes, we’ll be around awhile,
but those left are slowing down.
Like me, writing short stories,
not novels, and short poetry.
Though, at this time, not sharp
enough to research non-fiction,
I’m sad for the loss of knowledge,
however flawed or out of date.
Recorded facts do not have
all our individual memories,
how each life was perceived.
To misquote a favorite quote:
we were rocks that sat up
and looked around.

Eleanor Michael has published poetry and short stories in a variety of venues.

  1. Hello, there, Eleanor, welcome to Whispers! I love the humble approach your poem defines so well. One always feels they don't wish to waste one moment of their days, their lives, and yet, we wonder what we have failed to learn.........and to give back..... each of us can only hope that we have done our best. 2. Hi Eleanor,

What you describe poetically in your verse is quite true. It's hard enough to concentrate on short works like stories and poems. It took me years of research to write my novel and I doubt I'll be doing that again.

Even the inspiration for poetry doesn't always come. Guess some of us are "slowing down."

    Very thought-provoking poetry.

It is nice to be able to read your work on Whispers.

    Best wishes,
    Carolyn

  3. Hello Eleanor. This poem surely touches on something here. I, too don't write as many poems as I used to. I love when one finally comes! I like the way you expressed this moment in time. Well done!

  4. Eleanor, oh my yes with age we slow down not because we don't want to go faster and accomplish more but we just have so much going on in our minds and homes it seems one cannot keep up with it all. At least that is my experience. I loved your poem so well written. Thank you for sharing your talent with us all here on Whisper's. Your words touched my heart.
    Love, Charlene

  5. Very nice summary of the yet still wonderment of information, Eleanor. It is a shame how many, especially our children, regress to the Internet or anything that is quick and simple for information, even if that information they seek at these avenues is not always accurate. Give me a book any day. Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed reading and meditating upon it. Continued blessings!

  6. Thank you all for your kind words on Eleanor's creative poem. I will send your comments to her. Eleanor, I can really relate to this one. Some of those in the tech age miss out so much on the basics in life. Great message! Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.

    Blessings,
    Karen
