Grandpa, Sitting on the Porch--By Celine Rose Mariotti--United States

Grandpa, Sitting on the Porch

his favorite place to sit
in his old brown rocking chair
his Kelly on his head
wearing his old beige sweater
and a pair of dark visors over his glasses
that was Grandpa
he and I would sit on that old porch
he’d tell me stories
about growing up in Italy
Grandpa was funny and he
made me laugh
one day while we talked
he told me seriously
“Someday you’re going to be famous,
I won’t be here to see it,
But I know it’s going to happen”
My Grandpa, I hope your words are blessed,
For I always think about you,
Grandpa, you and me,
Sitting on the porch,
Those memories forever linger.

  1. Thank you, David Austin, for the following comment--

Love Mariotti's Grandpa Sitting on the Porch. My dad and I used to do the same things except the old chair was green - I wrote a poem once - The Old Green Chair. Love, Dave

"Glad to read your comment and that we both share a special memory. Not a day goes by that I don't think about my Grandpa. He's always in my heart just like your Dad and your special memory. And my Dad is also in my heart as he too is in Heaven now. I feel his presence all the time. Again, thanks so much for sharing."

  2. Aren't Grandpa's and Grandma's wonderful. Thank you for reminding me of mine and how they loved to visit with me and made me feel so special to them. Since I have two grandchildren living under my roof, I hope I can make them feel special too. Thank you for sharing your thought about your grandpa.
    Love, Charlene

    Celine,

This poem speaks a lot of what kind of a person is Granny to many
grandchildren, she or he plays a great role to give his or her
grandchildren a fire that they can make it in life. Nice one!

  6. Thank you for sharing this, Celine. Reminds me of my grandfather on my mother's side of the family. He had this recliner he loved where he would sit and tell us stories. I miss him and that recliner is still in my grandmother's home. I often sit in it when I go back home to visit. I was blessed by your poem and I would like to invite you to please consider submitting some of your material to Creative Inspirations. You can view more information at wwww.tgbtgpublictions.com.

Thank you and blessings to you!

  8. Hi Celine, your poem is obviously bringing wonderful memories back to others. It is the same for me. Even though my grandfather died when I was five, I can still remember sitting on his lap and listening to his stories. Very moving poem. Best wishes, Carolyn

This poem captures what many of us have experienced. I looked after my mother in her last years and she told me things she had never confided in my before. We were always close, but because we had the time to talk and share we became even closer.

It is so heartening to see poetry on the wisdom and beauty of age in conjunction with youth. Respect and love as it should be. Nostalgic. Thank you.
