Bad Bad Boys--By Charlene McCutcheon--United States

Bad Bad Boys

Looking back pensively through the annals of time,
there comes vividly a memory to my aging mind
of listening intently to stories on our old radio;
a must, aired weekly, called……….”The Shadow.”

My two younger siblings listened fixated too.
Don older, often teased, “The Shadow knew!”
He, Mama and Dad were not home, we thought.
Hanging on each word, that story we bought.

Not expecting it, suddenly the front door rattled.
When no one came in, we were all quite startled.
We became unglued at the back hall loud noise,
Convinced our fate was sealed by bad bad boys.

Running behind the couch, my little brother hid.
My little sister screamed and cried, “We’re all dead!”
I buried my panicky face in the sofa bed’s corner.
Daddy in the bedroom, yelled “What’s the matter?”

The front door locked, Don had come home unaware,
ran to the back door, stumbling in the hall on a chair.
Abject relief brought with it a giggly nervous laugh.
We never listened to …”The Shadow”… after that.

    1. Thank you Christine, that was a fun memory. Such silly children were we. Sometimes growing up doesn't get rid of all the just as silly fears. Love as it grows helps though.

    1. Ralph, thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my story poem. It seems our most easily remembered events are those that were traumatic at the time. I am reminded about how important it is to fill our minds with good uplifting media, hard to find in these days of violent and evil all around us.

    1. Elizabeth, so glad you could relate. Thank you for taking the time to read the poem and comment. I am also glad I can still remember childhood memories even if they are some of the traumatic ones that now make me laugh. At the time they just added to my fears. I am trying to change my way of thinking and look for the blessings of even the trials in life and elaborate on them.

    1. Thank you so much Paul for taking the time to read and comment with such kind words on my poem. I think it a good thing to recall and write about not only childhood memories but all memories, to leave for posterity. I love my dear mother's, grandmother's and grandfather's personal histories.

  7. enjoyed your childhood memory - it's good that we can mostly laugh at childhood fears now, isn't it? I recall an episode of Starsky & Hutch with a Dracula killer, which gave me sleepless nights for about a week, LOL

    1. Thank you Jack for reading and commenting on my poem. Like you say it is good to be able to mostly laugh at childhood fears now. It only took one viewing of a Dracula movie, to cure me of ever waning to watch one again. Some people love to watch scary movies, but not me. I have enough stress I my life without adding that. LOL

I never listened to "The Shadow" as that program was before my time. However, I can see from your poem how programs can affect people in different ways.

    1. You are so right Suzanne about the fact that media does have an effect on us, especially young impressionable children. I never liked scary movies either after that experience. That is the first time I ever remember being really frightened and I didn't like the feeling.

Dear Charlene--"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts and minds of men? The Shadow knows!" Your poem is a blast from the past. I loved reading it! It is great!

    1. Gerald thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my silly poem, though not a funny experience at the time. Children surely don't take ghost stories like I was listening too then, very lightly. It behooves us to teach our children to listen to and watch media that inspires and uplifts. I could never watch a scary movie even years later after that. :(

I remember my experiences listening to "The Shadow," sitting in Grandma's lap to help calm my nerves. Nice narrative.

    1. John thank you for sharing your experience with Grandma's lap and with "The Shadow". I am glad I am not the only one that was effected the way I was. It seems odd that a radio story could effect one so adversely. I know it was calculated to cause one to feel anxious and fearful. If I remember correctly it was like a TV soap opera that always left you hanging until the next episode and that was why we had to listen to every one, or thought we did until that fateful day. LOL

A delightful poem, Charlene. I've listened to recordings of those classic radio shows. Your poem really gave me a clear glimpse of what it must have been like to live through radio's Golden Age. Thank you!

    1. Thank you John for the kind words. I can still feel my frightened response to that night. Perhaps one thing was gained by me over the years; a clearer understanding that the "boogy man" is really mostly in our heads. We die a thousand deaths before we die when we fantasize the worst.

I loved it, read it to my family. I like the word annals, like unglued too. Like the rhyme, the rhythm works. I, too, remember radio plays and programs.

I share with you memories of "The Shadow." As a child, a sat in Grandma's lap, listening intensely as a voice echoed, "Who knows what lurks in the shadows." Thank you for awakening my boyhood memories.
