Shattered Dreams--By Karen O'Leary--United States

Shattered Dreams

moon peeks
through a frosty pane--
the wind moans

used dixie cups
strewn on the counter--
empty days

divorce papers
among the clutter--
broken promises

wedding picture
slides into the trash--
one becomes two

  1. YIKES! I forgot to share that this isn't about me. I have a wonderful husband, closing in on 35 years of marriage. Gayle is my life partner and best friend.

    1. Dear Peggy,

Divorce leaves so many scarred, most of all the children that pay the price over and over again. The "grass looks greener" as they say until one is embedded in that grace. Then, the damage can't be undone so easy. Thank you for the congrats! October 15 is the official day.

      Blessings,
      Karen

  5. Dear Karen, you wrote a poem with a poignant touch. Well written!
Readers sometimes think poetry is always the poet's life itself, personally, it's about 50-50 for me
It's a treasure being happily married for such a long time

    1. Dear Inge,

You are right about not everything not being about personal experience, but that's the conclusion that many come to when I've written pieces like this and right away assume the trouble relates to me. Thank you for your kind words and comments.

      Blessings,

    1. Dear Jack,

I love my husband and don't want people to think this is about us. It seems like that's the first assumption when a writer shares a more widespread problem. My heartache goes out to all the children that are deserted or left as pawns in a game between parents. Thank you for your thoughts.

      Blessings,

  8. Dear Karen,
Incredibly powerful; it captures the coldness and destructiveness of a divorce, yet right at the end, when the wedding picture goes into the trash, there is that sense of resolution and the resolve to go on and not give in. Superb.

    1. Dear Nick,

Thank you for your insightful comments...this is so destructive to everyone involved...something that those filing for divorce don't think about in the moment of lust. It is so good to have you a part of Whispers.

      Blessings,

  10. Each verse is striking and meaningful, Karen. I can feel the gradual breakup of a relationship and the ultimate closure...a time to stand up, take a deep breath and move on! Regards // paul

    1. Dear Paul,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Breakups have far reaching ramifications with the children left bouncing between parents far too often. Yes, at some point people move on but often with scars that never really heal. Thank you for your thoughts.

      Blessings,
