The Essence of Summer
Summer haze paints opaque skies
On long, hot days when the honeysuckle sighs
Dispersing perfume, inviting broad smiles
Warming hearts of children and busy dragon flies
Cool lemonade poured over crushed ice, awaits
Inviting long thirsts and simple tastes
All spread out under the shade of mango trees
Laden with fruit soon ripe for a feast
Light winds sail by giving leaves a twirl
As colored kites climb high, their ribbon tails in a whirl
Children's eyes filled with excitement are fixed on the sky
'Til the jingle of the ice cream truck is heard close by
These are the days which build memories to keep
Laughter, joy pervading; there’s no time to weep
The essence of summer; its tastes and sounds
For a lifetime they linger; as together we are bound

Audrey, your poem paints a delightful word painting of why I adore summer and despise winter ( ahem!) - Reluctantly, though, I must agree that the first sight of snow all over to the horizon is stunningly gorgeous, but the reality of that is, icy windshields, icy and dangerous road conditions, the rise of heating bills, to me, all the negatives outweigh the benefits of winter. If it were just spring, summer and autumn, I could embrace each one of these seasons. But, that old, nasty man is too mean for my liking! Ha, ha............. Sheri / www.poetryandbeyond.net
ReplyDeleteBeautiful imagery, wonderful poem!!
ReplyDeleteAudrey, there is so much here that rings familiar, and in a good way... I was just talking to a friend earlier about the ice cream trucks coming through the neighborhoods and wondering, if they still exist anywhere.
ReplyDeleteHis poem touches my heart, Audrey: "Cool lemonade poured over crushed ice, awaits," "Light winds sail by giving leaves a twirl," and many more great lines. Thank you for sharing this and continued blessings!

Audrey, thank you so much for bringing back wonderful memories of summer as a girl living in a home next to my grandparent's, both homes of which had honeysuckle vines that smelled like I thought heaven would smell, as soon as I walked out the door. In the cool night air it was strongest and I just loved sitting outside enjoying not only the cool breezes but the delightful fragrance. Those were happy days. All of your picturesque words, warmed my heart. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent.
