memory...--By Gert W. Knop--Germany

memory
has the face of an
invalid.
Thoughts
are engraved at the bottom
of the heart.
The search is another,
life goes by
like a crying child.
The day forgot its innocence
like a night bird
caged
in a silent time

Gert W. Knop, born in 1943, studies art and tropical agriculture in Germany and Scotland (University of Edinburgh). He has lived in many different countries and writes mainly in German, English and Spanish. He currently resides in Zittau (Saxony), Germany

  1. Gert, thank you for sharing a well written poem. I liked the line, "Thoughts are engraved at the bottom of the heart", especially. .

  2. Oh, that memory thing! Humans and memory are such a intricate combination. It always amazes me how courtrooms are filled with witnesses whose "memories" from long time past, are so detrimental in convicting an innocent man......!! In our individual minds, we tend to "see what we see" evaluate when we "see" - and 5 years later, the end-result is the same? I think not! Gert, you have got me goin'! 5. Dear Gert,

Your poem has more depth than my memory. I especially love the description of memory loss "like a night bird caged in a silent time." That is just how it feels. My memory is not what it once was.

It is wonderful to read your work again, my friend. I would love to see it translated as you once did on the site where we first met. Maybe you will have a chance to write to me again sometime. I'd love to hear from you.

Very compelling poem, especially for readers who see the memories of their loved ones fading.

    Love you!
    Carolyn
