Autumn Descant

October comes ablaze
in scarlet robes and gold crowns
Sun hangs low in the fields
sparking the wing tips of grasses

From the sweet gum   a lone leaf
            winds its way home
returns amber wealth to the soil
            and I remember—
it isn’t what lives in the light
but what returns from the dark
that stays forever
