Regrets--By Anna-Marie Docherty--Wales

Regrets

Once, love dreamed of,
I used to write her name
by mine, in hope she’d notice
Over and over, again, again, again.

She’d look with radiant smile
I’d do same
Would pass me by
Repeatedly, again, again, again.

Two doves we were,
both tender hearts so tame
Shy to speak
In dreams I’d call (your name) again, again, again.

So it came to be
There was no lover’s lane
As we lived our lives alone
Memories recalled – regrets, again, again, again.

Anna-Marie Docherty lives in Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK and is often inspired by nature and the world around her. Having been writing poetry now for 4 - 5 years, her works have developed in structure and form as well as using free verse in her writing as she walks this endless art form and creativity in her thirst to further learn. Letting the pen and the muse dictate topic and form both humour, religion, nature or the serious subject might be touched upon therefore keeping the writing fresh and easy to read by those who follow. Writing both as given name above and pen name anaisnais through the net, examples of poems can be found both in Snippets, an anthology of short verse by various international poets, compiled by Karen O'Leary and Patricia Ann Farnsworth-Simpson; also Pink Panther magazine, an anthology written by several poets and artists on feminist issues in our environment and various poems on the internet for taster.

  1. Hello, Anna Marie! I love the soft quality of your poem and how you enunciate throughout with a repeat effect which becomes a reminder in each or our own lives, thinking back and possibly with a little sadness and regret.... Sheri

    1. Thank you Sheri, how often we do not take opportunity that knocks to live but with regret - glad you stopped by and could relate - hopefully without too much regret...

    1. Hi Kristina, good to see you here, hope my words did not sing too much of your own regrets or cause too much sadness. Grab each moment and cherish...

  3. I personally don't relate to this poem, but the quality is certainly there. Gentle reading, bringing one a nice visual. BTW - I am single and not in love - usually don't read love poetry, but your 'Regrets' called to me...

  5. Dear Anna-Marie,
This poem is so moving that I have tears in my eyes. People sometimes are afraid to pursue love for fear of rejection, but that only leads to lonely lives. Love the refrain: "...again, again, again." You have been a bright light in my life and I am blessed to have you as a friend. Much love, Carolyn

    1. Hi Carolyn, good to see you as ever! To think this poem moved you is interesting feedback for me. Of course you are right re fear of rejection but so often we miss the timing of things for them never to become offered again - either to having moved on ourselves or someone else moved on, or of course fear of their own rejection and hurt after not being taken up a first time... If only we knew our own fate/fortune sometimes... Enchanted by your own friendship too hun, you are a treasure...

    2. Thanks for sharing very nice poem, Anna-Marie. I think most people have at least a few regrets in our lifetime. Yet, your poem's gentle tone speaks to "regrets" in a touching manner. Great job. Continued blessings!

  6. Anna Marie, thank you for a well written poem. Ah... the "might have beens" and yet we'll never know some of us. I enjoyed the repeats of again and again that added emphasis to the poem. Keep sharing your talent.

  7. Thanks for your thoughts Charlene, I wondered if I might have over done the repetition so appreciate that feedback too... Sometimes it can be better for us to have never known the might have beens... still, life is as is and cannot be undone - so we must play our cards carefully. Kindest thoughts...
