Spring!--By Robert P. Hansen--United States

Spring!

The stubble of the earth is brittle-brown;
It’s reaching for the sky like claws of death;
The snow has long-since settled in the ground,
and budding flowers draw in their first breath.
The cold and bitterness have gone away;
The warmth of sunlight dances on my skin;
with open arms and heart, I beckon May
and relish in my new-born spirit’s din.
The life and death of nature are as one;
They blend together ‘til it’s hard to tell
where one might end the other has begun,
a cycle that continues without fail.
As winter passes over its baton,
a burst of spring is relayed on the run!

  1. Robert, I really liked how you described how winter ends and spring begins hardly without knowing when one has ended and the other begun. I really liked these last two lines. "As winter passes over its baton, a burst of spring is relayed on the run!" A wonderful metaphor. Thank you for a well written poem that I really enjoyed.

  2. Robert, this is beautiful and so true. It seems we just settle into winter and already Christmas is gone and spring is on the way. Thank you for sharing this moment of joyful renewal with us.

  3. Hello, Robert, it is amazing how much nature and the seasons parallel metaphorically the lives of humans and through relationships of all types. Excellent poem, my friend, a pleasure to read! Sheri

  4. Hi Robert. Nicely written and descriptive poem. I can tell you, and possibly be speaking for most everyone here in Michigan, we certainly can't wait till winter hands over the baton to spring, lol. For now, though, I can at least feel the presence of spring in your poem. Thanks for sharing. Continued blessings!

    This poem presents the dawning of spring so originally. What wonderful metaphor, "the stubble of the earth" Your writing flows with wonderful art.
