She Remembers--By Carolyn Devonshire--United States

She Remembers

bits and pieces of the past
kaleidoscope of fractured memories
streets once familiar, now are mazes
faces haunt her dreams
former friends and lovers
their names she forgets

in the fog of confusion
occasional rays of sun still rise
she remembers a joyful childhood
loving parents with good values
she remembers her life is in God’s hands
and never forgets to express her gratitude
for the many blessings bestowed

A Florida writer, Carolyn enjoys writing humor but also receives inspiration from nature and people who touch her life. She has enjoyed co-writing with other poets and finds that both writers grow when they share their thoughts. She has spent most of her life as a reporter and a writer for magazines.

  1. Thank you, Christine Tate, for the following comment--

Hi Carolyn, I could relate to your lovely words, because my mother spent the last 2 1/2 years of her life in a nursing facility. Although her memory was only partially gone, she forgot many wonderful people, places and events. I kept jogging her memory when I visited her. As her daughter, it was difficult to accept, and a reminder that we must cherish our memories and trust the Lord for a clear, sound mind as long as possible! ~Chris

  3. Perfect timing for this one, Carolyn....the old year's gone and a new one has arrived! . One has to be grateful for memories, especially in the latter part of life when the world we once knew has changed in so many ways! Love it! Love, Annalise

    1. Dear Maurice,
Unfortunately, memory loss is part of my illness and it seems to grow worse every day. Still, I am thankful for the wonderful life God has given me and my faith grows stronger even as my health fails.
      Blessings to you, Carolyn

  7. Carolyn, I feel such love and acceptance in this poem, for one who has difficulty remembering. I only pray like my own mother who always said, I pray I can keep my marbles until the end. She joked about it but I knew she was serious. I wonder if we are grateful for all that is good in our lives and try to remember we are so blessed in so many ways that the habit will grow to be such that our memories will increase instead of dwindle with old age? It has been said that what we focus on comes back to us twice fold. Just a thought. Thank you for such a well written poem. I really enjoyed the read.
    Love, Charlene

  12. Hi, Carolyn, your poem kind of fills me with a certain sadness reminding me of my grandfather who had Alzheimer's and it was so sad to see the light in his eyes gone away and your poem is a reminder. It is a very beautiful and touching poem and fills a heart like a light summer breeze that touches ones heart........ Sheri

  13. This touches many of us who have parents, sons, daughters, with dementia of some form or other. My mom hasn't known me for a couple of years now, I totally understand these words. Janet

  14. It is those strongest values of life that seem to be the last that get taken although sadly some memories and sense of timing so often fade to be replaced by others... If a person is happy in their world then so be it, you sparked thoughts today, thanks for sharing...

Unique and fascinating, showing that even in the face of Alzheimer's, hope in God stays. Very good imagery.
