Enchantment of River Avon--By Annie Jenkin--England

Enchantment of River Avon

Capricious Bristol
a port and city
once traded in slaves.

It built the first ocean-liner
and Brunel's bridge
still straddles the river Avon.

When quays bustle with barges
the river's rhythm
tumbles its murky water.

As the day dims,
strands of coloured light
glisten over pathways,

traffic hum is swapped
by people talking
and echoes of footsteps.

Now the quiet river
fills with reflections
of the enchanted night.

Annie Jenkin lives in Plymouth, England. Having not written poetry for many years, Annie has returned to poetry writing with enthusiasm. Her writing explores several subject areas that are insightful, humorous but can also be sensitive.

  1. Dear Annie,
This poem places me in what must surely be an enchanting port-city. I like especially, "strands of coloured lights/glisten over pathways.
Thank you for this unique insight.

    1. Thank you Yancy, History does surprise us sometimes. I certainly did not expect to find Bristol as a port where so many were transported.

    2. Yes Annie & built the first ocean-liner and Brunel's
bridge that still straddles the river Avon. I really
      did enjoy it.

    1. Thank you Gert, the lights on the paths and on either side of the canal merged to give this wonderful glow.
